  Middle & High School Transition

In 2008, Mentor Public Schools will transition from the junior high / three-year high school model to the middle school / four-year high school model. This page allows you to get answers to questions about this transition and what changes to expect in the 2008-2009 school year. Please direct all questions relating to individual scheduling, credit requirements and courses to your student's guidance counselor.

Please submit questions using the 'Post a question' button, and we will answer it directly and post it here for others to read.

Q: Will there be an orientation at the high school for the new ninth and tenth graders prior to the start of the 2008 - 2009 school year?

Q: Is it true that next year at the high school there is going to be a staggered start with only sophomores and freshman showing up the first day and then everyone shows up after that?
A:

Yes, next year at Mentor High School, 9th and 10th graders will start school on Tuesday, September 2 and all students will attend on Wednesday, September 3. This will give 9th and 10th graders an opportunity to attend school for a transition day, without the upperclassmen. All staff members will be available to help students as they find their classes, open their lockers, and become acclimated to Mentor High School. The freshmen and sophomores will begin the school day on September 2 in an assembly designed to welcome them to the school. The program will be about 20 minutes. The students will then attend all of their classes where they will learn about each class from the teachers. Among the activities taking place in the classroom will be a review of expectations, reception of books and materials, and an opportunity to begin getting to know their classmates. There will be a little bit of extra time between classes to help students make their way through the building. Staff will be in the halls between classes helping students with their lockers and directions. Extra staff will also be assigned to classrooms to help teachers and students as necessary.

Q: What are some of the awards programs at the high school? How are exemplary students recognized?
A:

Exemplary students are recognized formally through the senior Spring Awards banquet and award ceremonies for sophomores and juniors. A ceremony will likely be added for freshmen. Students are also honored through the Bravo Program, at Board Meetings, and through the Positive Referral Process (2,000+ positive referrals a year are administered).

Q: Is it true that in order to be in a musical, you have to be taking a theatre class? How does this work?
A:

You do NOT need to be in the theatre class to be involved in theatre. The theatre class is totally separate from the theatre program. There will be an informational meeting on May 14th at 2:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. in the high school A-Lecture for any student interested in joining theater next year. These meetings are open to any student from 8th grade up.

Q: Why is the transition occurring when things are running smoothly?
A:

Research has shown that the ages grouped by the middle school / four-year high school model are more similar both socially and academically. Until now, enrollment has been too high for Mentor to adopt this model. The most compelling reason for the transition is a simple one: more opportunities for more students. Ninth graders will have considerably more options for classes and activities at the high school than they did at the junior highs. For example, freshmen will now have the opportunity to join the high school marching band, which under the junior high model was not possible. Sixth graders attending the middle schools will also have many more opportunities. They will now receive a full semester of physical education as opposed to the once-per-week offering at the elementary level. Sixth graders will also have daily music classes and a full semester of art. These are just a few examples of how the change will benefit students.

Q: Now that the 6th graders will no longer be attending the elementary schools, will there be after school care available at the middle schools?

Q: How are AP and honors classes different than regular classes?
A:

AP courses are designed to prepare students for Advanced Placement tests which can earn students college credit. The content in these courses is aligned to that which students would receive in a college level class. Honors courses are more rigorous high school classes.
